This is an elegant portrait of Marie-Jean-Augustin Vestris, who was more commonly known as Auguste Vestris (1760 – 1842); a French dancer that was born in Paris France, the illegitimate son of Franco-Italian dancer and choreographer Gaétan Vestris (1729 – 1808) and dancer Marie Allard (1742 – 1802).

The portrait shows him standing on a balcony with a forest terrain backdrop of very tall trees and a colorful blue sky with with multi-colored clouds composed of orange, Gelb, braun, violet and red hues.

He is wearing a fur top hat, goldene Ohrringe, a white silk scarf that is wrapped around his neck and tied over his chest, that is tucked into an open tan silk shirt.

On top of that he is wearing a top coat with silver buttons, that is buttoned from the mid chest downward; and he has light brown leather gloved covered hands folded in front of him, with a walking stick tucked under his left arm and over his left forearm, being held in place with his right hand.

Adèle Romany born into a wealthy family as the illegitimate daughter of the Marquis de Romance, and was a Parisian portrait and genre scene painter.

She was a pupil of the French painter Jean-Baptiste Regnault (1754 – 1829) and she was best known for the miniature portraits she created, in particular for those that involved people of the performing arts.

She exhibited her artwork under the her married name at the Paris Salon from 1793 zu 1808; as she had married miniature painter François Antoine Romany in 1790.

After she divorced from her husband in 1808 she exhibited her artwork under the name Romanée until 1833.
