Saint Veronica With The Veil
Saint Veronica With The Veil c1652-53 by Italian Painter Mattia Preti (1613 – 1699); a Baroque style and Fresco painter as well as a member of the Order of Saint John.
This is a religious portrait painting depicting Saint Veronica who is holding the Veil of Christ; who in the Christian Religion, was the woman that was so moved by the suffering of Jesus Christ, as he was carrying his cross to Golgotha, where he was to be Crucified; in an act of compassion, gave him her kerchief to wipe his face, and when he gave it back to her left the impression of his face on the kerchief.
In this painting Saint Veronica is shown wearing a white kerchief over her head a blue robe and on top of that a tan off white cloak that has gold embroidered symbols on it. She appears to be in a seated position as she holds with the tips of the fingers of both hands the Veil with the face of Christ on it.
