Augustus Bouvier era hijo del artista nacido en París Jules Bouvier (1800-1867), que se mudó a Londres con su familia en 1818. Su hermano, Gustavus Arthur Bouvier, también se convirtió en un pintor de figuras británico.
Bouvier era estudiante de la Royal Academy. Posteriormente pasó a completar sus estudios en Francia e Italia..
