An Art Deco Elegant Pose

An Art Deco Elegant Pose by American Artist Billy Devorss (1908 – 1985); known for his pin up girl illustration art using pastels.

This is an elegant art deco glamour pin-up girl illustration of a raven haired beauty dressed in an elegant full length satin white evening dress that is tied off at the front waist with a large diamond encrusted brooch.

The brooch is complemented with a beautiful floral wing designed, diamond encrusted headdress that shows out of the left and right side of her hair; accenting her black hair beautifully.

She is also wearing long arms length red leather evening gloves that match her red leather shoes that can just be seen through the slit at the base of her dress.

The young lady is posed standing with her right palm resting on her right hip and her left arm resting on a large pedestal to her left; while white light shines up from the large gab behind her and transitions upward to blue (the main color of the artwork), creating a cloud like appearance as though she is on a high ledge in the sky.

This is a remastered digital art old masters reproduction of a public domain image that is available as a canvas print online.

Billy was born William Albartus DeVorss in St. Joseph, Missouri in 1908, and graduated from the Kansas City Art Institute in 1934 (Note: there is other information that says he was entirely self taught!); then moving to New York’s Greenwich Village and working there until the early 1950s; where upon he moved back to the midwest with his wife.

Billy, like Rolf Armstrong used pastels to create his pinup illustrations and created an idealized romantic girl next door look of the young ladies he painted.

His work was often featured on muotscope cards (still images, typically of pin-up material, printed on cards and sold through vending machines in a 5 ¹⁄₄-by-3 ¹⁄₄-inch format.), postcards, calendars, and prints.

He also did advertising art, cover art for the publications Beauty Parade, Eyeful and Flirt.
