Portrait Of An Elegant Woman

Portrait Of An Elegant Woman by French Painter Francois Martin-Kavel (1861 – 1931); was a portrait artist special in delicate women’s genre scenes.

This is a portrait of a beautiful blonde young woman from the era of the Roaring Twenties sitting in a leaning pose of a chair, resting her left elbow on a large embroidered red pillow with a large green diamond shaped center and golden flare accents around its border.

She is wearing a red rose that is hanging below her right ear, a red ribbon around her forehead, that is also tying off her golden hair; and she is wearing off her right shoulder white lingerie with a pink shoulder strap and a black negligee, that flows over both of her arms.

The background of the image is simple with a red drape hanging on the wall behind off of her right and the rest of the wall is painted a reddish brown, with some areas being darker than others.

This is a retouched digital art old masters reproduction of a public domain image.

François Martin-Kavel was a French genre painter who is best known for his idealized portraits of beautiful young women, which he often depicted in exotic costumes or in titillating states of undress.

Martin-Kavel notably often painted his female portraits in centered compositions that were surrounded by dark fabric backgrounds, and theatrically lit as though by spotlight shining on the model.

Even though François his known for his popular female figure portraits, he was also well known for his still life floral artwork and landscape paintings; and was a regular exhibitor at the Salon des Artistes Français.

As a member of the salon, he was awarded a medal for his artistic contributions in 1881.
