The Adoration of the Magi with Torches

The Adoration of the Magi with Torches by Flemish Engraver Nicolaes Lauwers (1600 – 1652), after a painting by Flemish Painter Peter Paul Rubens (1577 – 1640); known for his religious or mythological themes.

This Biblical engraving of the baby Jesus in a manger, shows him at about the age of one, standing on a hay filled wrapped cloth that is placed on a wooden table, with his mother Mary holding him up for support.

While standing on the table Jesus has his right hand on the head of one of the three wise man that is kneeling on the floor in front of him; with the two other wise men standing to his left admiring Jesus.

Behind Mary is Joseph, and to his left there are three young men of which two are carrying torches to illuminate the room and one is also carrying an incense burner.

The other young man is on his right knee carrying a bowl of coins; and to his left behind the wise man that is kneeling is another young man carrying a bowl of what may be fruit.

Up the stairs from this level is a soldier using his shield to keep other men from going down the stairs as the look art Jesus giving his blessing.

About The Artist

Nicolaes Lauwers was a Flemish engraver who was active in Antwerp in the 17th century; who is known for the engravings he created after the works by Peter Paul Rubens (1577 – 1640), Anthony van Dyck (1599 – 1641), and other Flemish masters of the time.

He is also created many of his own compositions, which were often based on religious and mythological themes. Some of his most notable works include his engravings of the “Triumphal Arch” series by Rubens and his portrait engravings after van Dyck.
