Jean-Étienne traveled a great deal throughout Europe painting portraits for Imperial families and the nobility as his portraits were in great demand throughout European captials including Rome, Istanbul, Paris, Vienna, Londres, Holland and other cities; painting portraits for the likes of Lord Byron, Madame de Pompadour, the Vienna Imperial Family, Francesco Algarotti, Princess Augusta of Saxe-Gotha, the Princess of Wales and Marie Antoinette.
